This poster was printed as part of The World’s UnFair by New Red Order (NRO), a biting, satirical take on historic World’s Fairs and what the creators argue were their racist, colonial practices. The free public art installation was on view in Queens, New York, from September through October 2023. The poster incorporates two modern advertising images ubiquitous to New York City: the iconic I 🧡NY logo by American graphic designer Milton Glaser and the recently popularized Brooklinen-brand tote bag sported by celebrities and chic Brooklyn residents. Both have come to symbolize not just a move to the city but also its gentrification. Here, however, the motifs have been reinterpreted: Glaser’s heart has been replaced by a petroglyph of a human figure in a canoe and the bedding company’s name by that of the Lenape peoples’ name for their traditional homeland (of which New York City is a part). For those interested in giving back this stolen land (and using that moving box to go elsewhere), a hotline listed at the bottom is ready to assist.
