This inventive advertisement by an anonymous designer shows a girl in a “poster dress” hanging on a street wall next to the remnants of old wheatpasted advertising posters as if she were a poster herself. It captures the avant-garde reputation of the furnishing and housewares store Bonniers on Madison Avenue in its heyday; founded in 1911 as a bookstore, in 1950 under the presidency of Goran Holmquist it began to offer what the New York Times described as “pace‐setting selections of Scandinavian, Bauhaus‐influenced and Italian modern tablewares furnishings, crafts and lighting” (September 28, 1974). It closed in 1974 under pressure from nearby department stores like Bloomingdales that had begun to sell much the same kind of merchandise.
