This poster was jointly sponsored by two pan-African NGOs based in Kenya: the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF), which aims to provide both community and environmental healthcare (most especially dealing with HIV/AIDS prevention at the time this image was printed) and the Foundation for Sustainable Development in Africa (FSDA), which works to encourage long-term domestic funding for financial development. It was created specifically for a conference in Nairobi looking to acknowledge the city’s achievements and explore potential solutions for further growth. Kenya has been seen across Africa and much of the Global South as a strong example of success in the green transition. In this busy composition, environmental policies are portrayed as going hand-in-hand with general modernization and prosperity, indicating that small initiatives can cumulatively create a “green city in the sun.” In spite of these achievements, Nairobi still faces significant environmental challenges brought about by rapid urbanization and population growth. The city suffers from severe water pollution as well as high vehicle emissions that negatively impact air quality. In December 2025, AMREF announced that it would be partnering with the Qatar Fund for Development to work on an initiative for urban health resilience that would presumably address many of these environmental factors.
