Seymour Chwast’s characteristically colorful, eye-catching composition advertises Here We Are, the posthumous production of Stephen Sondheim’s unfinished musical (he had died in 2021) with a book by David Ives and directed by Joe Mantello. The show opened at The Shed in New York City in October 2023 and was based on two Surrealist films by Luis Buñuel, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel. Chwast’s image of the woman here, wearing an extravagant and curiously decorated hat, points to the essential absurdity of the characters in this story, a group of wealthy and superficial friends who trawl Manhattan in search of the best brunch, ultimately finding themselves trapped together in the “Morandan Embassy.” These designs were approved by the Sondheim estate as advertisements after his death, but ultimately were never put into circulation.
