Paul Davis’s poster promotes the 1985 American production of British playwright David Hare’s A Map of the World that had opened in London in 1983; like many of the 51 posters he designed for the theater under Joseph Papp between 1975 and 1991, it is dominated by realistic portraits of the leading actors. In this case, he shows the conservative Indian novelist (played by Roshan Seth) and the radical English journalist (Zeijko Ivanek) whose clashing ideologies become the focus of a conference sponsored by UNESCO in Bombay. The two supporting actors shown here with them are Alfre Woodard and Elizabeth McGovern. Davis also served as the art director for the company between 1984 until Papp’s death in 1991. In 1994, Paula Scher would introduce an entirely new visual language to the theater’s branding and promotional materials.
