A simple drawn composition by an unknown designer shows the protagonist of The Roofer Returns, a 1985 Finnish-language production of celebrated Russian playwright and director Aleksandr Galin’s successful 1979 play (known in the Soviet Union as Retro) about generational conflict. The bleak image in a restricted color palette emphasizes the loneliness of the old man who has moved from the countryside to live with his daughter and her husband in a cramped apartment in Moscow. The play was as well received in Finland as it had been in theaters all over the Soviet Union, running to around one hundred performances.
