This government-issued poster by an unknown designer publicizes the smoking ban in public places in France instituted in January of 2008, in line with other European countries like Ireland and Italy. It is based on a photograph of a table in the corner of an ordinary French bar or café, precisely the kind of location favored by smokers. The government also pledged 100 million Euros to help people quit. At the time, around one quarter of the adult population smoked—and the new legislation was not received favorably.
