Based in Kenya, the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) was founded in 1979 with the mission to educate people on sustainable environmental conservation and to enhance mankind’s relationship with nature. The Giraffe Centre is a subset within AFEW focusing on outreach to students and tourists through opportunities to come in close contact with the Rothschild Giraffe, a formerly endangered species. This poster is one of many the organization created to help educate school children. It highlights how Kenya is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, noting its many distinct ecosystems. Curiously, it fails to mention the glacier ecosystem on Mount Kenya. Kenya is Africa’s leader in renewable power, generating 90 percent of its electricity through clean sources, including hydro, geothermal, and wind. It also has one of the world’s strictest single-use plastics policies. Kenya banned plastic bags in 2017 and, in 2020, prohibited all single-use plastics in protected areas like public parks. Since its establishment in 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme has been based in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital—the first international organization of this magnitude headquartered in the Global South. Its presence reinforces the country’s ecological achievements while also acting as a draw for other NGOs, including UN Habitat, which has been based in the city since 1978. As noted on the poster, the country’s programs have managed to respect traditional land use systems while utilizing new and emerging technologies.
