This is one of a series of posters featuring a photograph of the same happy- and healthy-looking family (shown here with one of a smiling nurse) issued by the Zambian Ministry of Health to support its family planning programs, partly sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). By the mid-1980s, when this poster was published, Zimbabwe was one of few African countries that provided significant access to contraception outside urban centers. The U.S. government began International Family Planning and Reproductive Health programs in 1965 and quickly became the largest donor to such initiatives. In 2024, USAID provided approximately 40 percent of all international donor funding for Family Planning Programs globally. USAID was dismantled by the Trump administration in July 2025.
