This poster for the West German leg of Ike and Tina Turner’s 1971 European tour was created at the height of their fame. They had recently released their cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary” and it had quickly become their best-selling single (winning them a Grammy Award in 1972). Their new album, Workin’ Together, would be the most successful of their careers. While the original album cover features a photograph of the performers stoically facing the same direction, with Ike in shadow and Tina bathed in warm, amber light, here designer Günther Kieser combined press photographs of them with woodblock-inspired illustration. Although the two heads emerge from the same stem, they appear as individual, separate flowers in gendered hues that match those of their names in the lower text banner.
