This poster shows an armed Indigenous woman faces east toward the dawn while holding a plant, acting simultaneously as a giver of life and as a defender. These two roles are often separated by European gender norms; however, in many Indigenous cultures, they are shared equally between women and men. While artist Melanie Cervantes is of Xicanx heritage (Native Mexican), she chose to produce this poster in English and Cree (one of the largest Native groups originating from present-day Canada). This gesture reflects a unity shared by all Native people, one also emphasized by the different plants held by the two women—both serve as food to nourish their people but each is local to a specific region.
