In 1913, Ludwig Hohlwein was commissioned to create this poster for the large grocery store Franz Kathreiner Nachfolger, founded in Munich in 1870, to promote its wines. (The store was best known for its imported goods like coffee, tea, and spices as well as its Malzkaffee [malt coffee]). This was one of many designs that Hohlwein produced for high-end Munich stores in the years before World War I, each featuring his distinctive version of the Sachplakat (object poster) style that integrated bold, simple forms and distinctive lettering; like the others, this poster showing a king in fur-trimmed robes (and what might also be a fur-trimmed throne) incorporates more texture and pattern than the versions originated by his compatriot Lucian Bernhard. In 1909, he had produced a similarly luxurious image, featuring a giant lobster, to promote the city’s Wilhelm Mozer delicatessen and wine dealership.
