The Finnish graphic designer Pekka Loiri created this poster for a mid-1980s production of the musical comedy Kaunis Veera (Beautiful Veera) at the Lappeenranna City Theater in Finland; it follows the Finnish steamboat the Princess Armada as it sails all the way to St. Petersburg at a time when Finland was under Russian rule. The play was written in 1949 by Finnish writer and lyricist Tatu Pekkarinen and based on a popular song of the same name that he had written with Matti Jurva. Kaunis Veera was turned into a film the following year. Here, Pekka Loiri subverts the visual conventions established by the film poster of 1950, focused on an alluring image of Veera, a beautiful Roma girl who joins the motley crew on the boat, in favor of a simple drawing of a vessel in a breakfast bowl, one suggesting a storm in a teacup rather than a grand historical drama.
