In this poster, David F. Barry’s 1885 ethnographic portrait of Lakota Chief Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake (Sitting Bull) becomes a mouthpiece for Indigenous expression, highlighting a famous quote by the chief in the color of Indigenous resistance. Issued at the height of Indigenous activism in the 1970s, it demonstrates how many Natives looked to the past for inspiration and guidance. Here, that wisdom focuses on the building of a collective future rather than individual glory.
