This 1966 poster promoting a lifestyle and furnishing event at Heal’s furniture store in London was designed by Alan Fletcher of Crosby, Fletcher, Forbes, the design studio that he cofounded in 1965 and that collaborated on the event. Fletcher, a giant of British modern design, went on to cofound Pentagram in 1972; his composition, its bold geometries and colors evoking both the Swiss Grid style and the Pop art of the day, was intended to attract the attention of fashionable young career girls looking for ways to furnish their London flats and bedsits. Shirley Conran, who worked on the event with the studio, was a designer and, at the time, the first women’s editor of the Observer magazine. Heal’s itself, founded in 1810 as a mattress store, had long been known for its modern, high-quality, affordable designs. (In 1983, it was acquired by Sir Terence Conran, Shirley’s ex-husband.)
