The prominent and prolific German graphic designer Holger Matthies is best known for his posters for theater, opera, and other cultural events. This is one of several posters he produced during the 1970s and ‘80s for an annual competition for young playwrights and performers held by the Städtische Bühnen Münster (Municipal Theater in Münster, now the Theater Münster). The venue, dedicated to productions for young people, had opened in a new building in 1956, the first new theater building introduced in Germany after the war. Matthies’s design here, featuring a slightly sinister and bizarre collection of historic figurines on a stage, reflects his surreal style and his belief that “good posters sometimes contain a slice of anarchy.”
