In August 1971, The Who released its fifth studio album, Who’s Next, quickly becoming known as the legendary rock band’s best record to date. While the standard poster for The Who’s European tour in 1972 featured a photograph of guitarist Pete Townsend, Günther Kieser chose a more idiosyncratic image for the band’s West German performances. To produce the composition, he handcrafted a lion doll with human features and had it photographed; he then added rub-down typography for the text. One of the three singles released in conjunction with Who’s Next was “Baba O’Reilly,” a song that pays homage to both Townsend’s Indian guru, Meher Baba, and the minimalist composer Terry Riley. Baba taught his devotees that they must throw themselves like food to “the lion of love” and be prepared to be consumed entirely by that lion rather than keeping it caged, separate and safe. Kieser may be referencing this concept here, inviting fans to give themselves over entirely to the music. Contemporary audiences may be most familiar with “Baba O’Reilly” as the theme song for the television show CSI: NY. The franchise has featured multiple songs by The Who during the show’s opening credits, including “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” also from Who’s Next, for CSI: Miami.
